Gezi
Gezi is the name of a park situated in the center of Istanbul. On May 27th 2013, municipal authorities stormed the park with bulldozers and heavy machinery. Through social media the news spread in a flash and environmental activists rushed to the park to stop the demolition.
The severity of the police raid against the environmentalist roused widespread anger and caused more and more people to join the demonstrations, which then turned into anti-government protests spreading through numerous cities in Turkey.
The protestors set up camp and lived in the park until June 15. In the end the plans for the demolition were stopped however ten people died, 10,000 were wounded and large-scale economic losses were suffered. The event would come to be known as the Gezi Park protests.
Gezi
Gezi, İstanbul’un merkezinde yer alan bir parkın adıdır. Belediyeye bağlı birimler, 27 Mayıs 2013 tarihinde iş makinelerini parka soktular. Bu haberin sosyal medya aracılığıyla kısa sürede yayılması sonucunda, bazı aktivistler parka gidip makineleri durdurmaya çalıştı.
Polisin sert müdahaleleri sonrası destekçilerin sayısı hızla arttı ve protestolar hükümet karşıtı gösterilere dönüşerek Türkiye’nin çeşitli illerine yayıldı.
Protestocular, parkta kamp kurup, 15 Haziran tarihine kadar orada yaşadılar. Sonuçta inşaat faliyeti durdu; ancak 10 kişi öldü, 10.000’e yakın vatandaş yaralandı ve ciddi ekonomik zararlar oluştu. Yaşananlar şehrin tarihine ‘gezi olayları’ adıyla kaydedildi.
