Postmodern Pera
Pera is a historical neighborhood in Istanbul. Its origins go back to the earliest times in the city’s history but the more definitive changes began after the 17th century. During this time Pera became a district settled predominantly by Christian inhabitants, adorned with embassies belonging to European powers including the French and the Venetian and the elegant homes and palaces of foreign diplomats, resembling a European city.
By the 19th century, as the Ottoman Empire was incorporated into the industrial capitalist world, Pera became an international trade center; a hotspot for foreigners, tradespeople, bankers, shipping magnates, and the wealthy who settled into this cosmopolitan district and modeled themselves after the fashions of Paris.
The first electric tram began running in 1913 in Pera making it into an even busier hub, with modern art deco buildings popping up along the avenues.
The waves of rural migration and rapid urbanization starting in the 1950s overcrowded Istanbul and left its mark on Pera as well. The photographs in this series reflects the present conditions of this district which boasts of a glorious past.
Postmodern Pera
Pera İstanbul’un eski bir mahallesi. Geçmişi ilk çağlara kadar uzansa da asıl gelişimi 17.yüzyıldan sonra başlamış. O dönemde Pera, şehrin hristiyan nüfusunun oturduğu, Fransız ve Venedik başta olmak üzere, elçilik binalarının yer aldığı, batılı diplomatların taştan yapılmış köşkleriyle renk kattığı, avrupai bir kenti andırıyormuş.
19. yüzyılda, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun dünya kapitalist sistemi ile bütünleşmesi sonucu, Pera uluslararası bir ticaret merkezi olmuş; yabancıların, tüccarların, bankerlerin, armatörlerin ve kozmopolit bir çevreye yerleşmek isteyen zenginlerin Paris modasını taklit ederek yaşadıkları bir yere dönüşmüş.
1913’te ilk elektrikli tramvayın Pera’dan başlaması semti daha merkezi bir duruma getirmiş, art nouveau üslubu ile yapılmış çağdaş binalar caddeleri süslemeye başlamış.
1950’lerden sonra, kırsal göç ve hızlı kentleşme sonucu, İstanbul’un aşırı büyümesinden Pera da etkilendi. Bu serideki fotoğraflar parlak bir geçmişe sahip bu tarihi semtin bugünkü halini yansıtmaktadır.
